Age of Empires II Edit
The Native Americans were first featured as a simple civilization in the expansion pack of Age of Empires II. The Conquerors expansion featured Central American natives which were the Aztecs and the Mayans. Sadly, the Native Americans are the only civilizations who completely lack the ability to train cavalry units. This is partially balanced by the fact that they start with Aztec Eagle Warriors, infantry units who have many of the advantages that cavalry has. Both Native civilizations also lack all gunpowder units.
Age of Empires III Edit
The Native Americans are more diverse in Age of Empires III which takes place in the New World. In Age of Empires III you cannot control the Native American civilizations, but you are able to control their special units by building a Trading Post near their settlement and creating an alliance between you and the Natives. Forming an alliance with the Native Americans can also give you special upgrades to benefit you in exchange for resources. There are twelve Native American tribes to forge alliance with. Aztecs, Carib, Cherokee, Comanche, Cree, Inca, Iroquois, Lakota, Maya, Nootka, Seminole and Tupi.
In Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs expansion pack you are now able to control three of the largest and most powerful Native American civilizations which are the Iroquois, Sioux, and the Aztecs. As the Native Americans the game provides you with new ways to win the game. There are four new Native American tribes and Three additional ones which replaces the ones elevated into playable civilizations. Aztecs were replaced by Zapotecs, Iroquois by Huron and Lakota (Sioux) by Cheyenne, others are Apache, Mapuche, Navajo and Klamath.
